WHAT IS TRUE AROMATHERAPY? Aromatherapy is a very misunderstood healing modality. In the
United States
the general public regards the term to mean “something that smells good”
such
as; a candle, bubble bath, car freshener or room deodorizer.
The term has been
hijacked by popular commercial products that actually contain toxic
chemicals.
Many companies use the term loosely for their products because it has
gained
recognition and appeals to a great number of consumers.
Aromatherapy simply put, is “the art and science of using pure
essential oils for health, healing and well being". Pure essential
oils
are aromatic substances derived from; herbs, roots, flowers, bark,
seeds
and fruit.
Only pure therapeutic grade essential oils can invoke healing
properties and
cause physiological responses in the human body. Aromatic oils affect
the part
of the brain called the limbic system, which is responsible for our
basic
instincts, memories and emotions.
Simply smelling a pleasant odor does not mean that you will obtain
any health
benefit from it. This is the main difference between true Aromatherapy
and
fragrance. A perfume or fragrance oil is not going to stop pain, relieve
headaches, soothe the skin or help you relax. In fact, many artificial
fragrances are responsible for allergic reactions, chemical
sensitivities and
asthma attacks.

WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?
True Aromatherapy is the practice of healing with essential oils.
Essential
oils are produced from herbs, flowers, trees, grasses, bark, seeds and
fruit.
They are steam distilled plants from named botanical species and
used
holistically to treat mental, emotional, and physical conditions.
Essential oils
are highly concentrated, volatile extracts distilled from aromatic
medicinal
plants containing hormone-like properties and natural anti-microbial
compounds.
Essential oils, in the physiological meaning of the term, are
produced by the
secretory cells of the plants which have tapped the
photo-electro-magnetic
energy of the sun and have converted it, with the intervention of
enzymes, into
biochemical energy under the form of highly diversified aromatic
molecules.
Essential oils are composed of tiny molecules and because of their
infinitesimal size, essential oil molecules can easily pass through all
of the
tissues of the plant and into their very cells, passing right through
cell
walls. They bring nutrition and information into the cell and carry
waste
products out. The fact that they are oils; mixtures of lipid compounds
enhances
this penetration power enabling them to administer to the plant’s needs
from
gross circulation to the internal workings of a cell.
HOW DO ESSENTIAL OILS WORK?
Odors have an impact on our mental and physical states through our
sense of
smell.
We smell odors by inhaling the air around us and sending the
invisible
molecules through the olfactory system and into the brain itself.
For a better understanding of the Olfactory System
Click
Here This part of
the brain is called the limbic system; it is responsible for regulating
our
emotions, memory, as well as the autonomic nervous system. Your
receptors are
determined by your DNA and if you do not have the receptor you will not
be able
smell that particular odor.
Essential oils work by skin absorption and inhalation. This is how
the oils
enter the blood stream. When inhaled, the tiny molecules pass through
the blood
brain barrier and cause an instant response with the endocrine and
nervous
system.
By inhaling relaxing oil, like Lavender, Lavendula angustifolia,
you
will feel calmer in just minutes.
On the contrary, if you smell Rosemary, Rosmarinus officinalis, it
will stimulate the central nervous system and you
will feel more alert.
HOW CAN YOU BENEFIT BY USING ESSENTIAL
OILS?
Aromatherapy is beneficial for every human being and aims to balance
the
whole person mind, body, and spirit.
Aromatherapy is helpful for; tension,
stress, anxiety, insomnia, pain relief, colds and flu, sinus congestion,
respiratory conditions, PMS, menopause, muscle spasms, skin disorders,
mental
fatigue and depression.
The oils are too concentrated to be used directly on the skin. They
must be
mixed into unscented lotion or massage oil. Use no more than 10 drops of
essential oil per 1 ounce of lotion or carrier oil. May be used on the
skin for;
sunburn, wrinkles, acne, cuts, scrapes and rashes.
For a small investment in your health, you can stock your medicine
cabinet
full of safe and effective remedies. You can also enjoy making a few
simple
beauty and household products, instead of the commercial varieties that
are
filled with harmful chemicals and preservatives. To use in the home put a
10
drops of essential oil in an electric diffuser. This will kill germs
& bacteria,
as well as unpleasant food and pet odors.
The top 10 selling essential oils on the market are; Lavender,
Eucalyptus,
Tea Tree, Peppermint, Lemongrass, Patchouli, Orange, Grapefruit, Jasmine
and
Rose.
This form of healing should be complementary and not used in place of
traditional healthcare for more serious diseases.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Essential oils must be diluted in an unscented carrier oil, lotion or
crème
for use on the skin and may also be used “neat” (undiluted) in a
diffuser.
Electric Diffuser - Apply 7-10 drops of essential oil to the
diffuser
cartridge underneath the machine. Turn on high or low setting depending
on how
much aroma you prefer. The scent will be effective for approximately 2-3

to half
an ounce of unscented massage lotion, crème or oil, mix well and apply

Epsom salts or whole milk.

water then cover your head with a towel and inhale the aroma for 5
minutes. Make
sure to keep your eyes closed or use eye pads for protection.

the palm
of hands, rub together and cup hands over nose and mouth and inhale
deeply. This
is beneficial for a quick and effective treatment.
Compress - Add 3-5 drops of essential oil into a small bowl of
warm or
cool water soak a towel in the water and wring out excess and apply to

I tell my students and clients, it's
very simple. The skin care products you are
using are food for the skin. They should nourish, hydrate, and protect.
If you
are careful with your diet and do not believe in putting strange
chemicals and
preservatives into your body, why are you rubbing them into your skin.
If you
can not pronounce the ingredients in your food, you should not consume
it and
that goes for your skincare and spa products too.
Women do not realize that these products are not just skin-deep. They
can
penetrate through the epidermis (the top layer) into the dermis, (the
deeper
layers of skin.) The dermis contains small capillaries in which the
chemicals
can pass into the blood stream. The average women, uses 12 personal care
products each day and over the span of 45 years. Over time, these
chemicals
build up in the system and have been linked to severe allergies, birth
defects,
and cancer.
